Drobo FS

2010-08-29

I recently bought a Drobo FS with 5x 2Tb Hard Drives off of ebay. I like that it acts as a file server and connects to my router via a network cable. It's nice that the drives are RAID'ed so that replacing one bad drive will not result in data loss. It allows for two but that was too much of a sacrifice for me. As it is, I get 8Tb space out of it. The front door is held in place by a series of magnets running along each side. The LEDs on the bottom indicate progress of operations. The LEDs on the right indicate drive health. When I received it, it had very nice packaging and came with a nifty Windows program that allows the shares I create to be auto-mounted at startup. I also save a lot of space and power-plugs by having one box instead of 4 individual USB drives. Unfortunately, the ethernet-only connection seems to limit the upload speed to 10mbps. It just makes the preliminary upload take longer than the 15mbps I was getting using USB2. After hooking it up and putting an AVI on it, it was a breeze to get XMBC on my X-Box to recognize it on the network and play the file.

Check out my latest gadget:

It's about the size of a book and is quite heavy. It requires it's own power source unfortunately, but it is 1Tb after all.

I'm using it to back up my music, all my games, and my PC applications.

From the Hitchhiker's Guide: Turning Test

2007-12-08

Found an interesting description of the Turing Test from the Hitchhiker's Guide [bbc.co.uk]:

A test for artificial intelligence suggested by the mathematician and computer scientist Alan Turing. The gist of it is that a computer can be considered intelligent when it can hold a sustained conversation with a computer scientist without him being able to distinguish that he is talking with a computer rather than a human being.

Some critics suggest this is unreasonably difficult since most human beings are incapable of holding a sustained conversation with a computer scientist.

After a moment's thought they usually add that most computer scientists aren't capable of distinguishing humans from computers anyway.
